Interviews with Past Students

Nicolas from France – (course: General English)

Can you tell me something about yourself?

I recently finished a Master’s degree in Business and was working for a company who sponsored my studies.

Why did you decide to study English in NZ?

I needed to improve my English and I really wanted to discover the country. This was a way of doing both.

Why did you choose WELS?

Because I’m living close by. I’m working at a backpackers in the mornings in return for my accommodation. Because WELS offers part-time classes I can work in the morning and go to school in the afternoon. I saw the school on the website and when I came for a trial day I saw the classes were not too big.

What is it like here?

The teacher is very good and I like the class because it is not too big for speaking.

What are your plans for the future?

When I go back to France next week I will search for a job.

What advice would you give someone coming to study here?

It is better to live with a homestay family so you can practice speaking English more.

Eva from Czech Republic – (course: General English)

Eva, can you tell me something about yourself?

I’m 29 and I come from Czech Republic. I’m an oncology nurse.

Why did you decide to study English in NZ?

Because I could get a good visa . I’m here with my boyfriend. He thinks it’s the best country for him

Why did you choose WELS?

I was looking for 3 things: good qualities, a good price and if I like it. I first saw this school on the Internet. It had a good quality website, a good choice of study possibilities and good discount (for 6 months)

What are your plans here in NZ?

To get a job. I’ve already got one in a care home ( for the elderly). The school really helped me 100%. I could get to know people; they helped me with my language skills and I got more confident when speaking, listening and thinking in English.

What is it like here?

I like the teachers’ personalities; they are outgoing and very patient ; they always helped me. The school has a good method of teaching and the levels are good for each student.
Although Christchurch has been damaged by the earthquakes, around Christchurch there is very nice clean, green scenery where I enjoy spending time.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to keep up my level of English. I’m going to work in a rest home in Christchurch and I want to learn the best way to do this job. I have 6 more months here and at the end we will decide if we want to stay.

What advice would you give someone coming to study here?

Please read books every day. Never stop studying English even if you have a headache from studying English!!
